Screen printing is one of the most traditional methods of t-shirt printing in the world. Since ancient civilizations, the screen printing technique was used to print on various surfaces, and was considered an expression of ancient art since its inception, but how does screen printing work? Here you are going to find out the answers to all of your questions.
How was screen printing born?
How Does Screen Printing Work?
Screen printing is a printing technique that transfers ink or paints through metal or wooden frames with a stretched nylon mesh. The mesh allows the ink to pass only through the parts that correspond to the image. A screen emulsion blocks the ink passage.
This emulsion hardens when developed. This chemical reaction is used to etch the image onto the screen. To harden the emulsion, and since it is light sensitive, we recommend using a light table.
To etch the image with the screen emulsion on the mesh it must be in the positive format (100% black ink). The image in positive format will block the light in the area where we do not want the emulsion to harden, allowing the ink to pass through this area later.
This is why this type of printing can only achieve spot colors. Screen printing does not process complex compositions, shading, or gradients.
Mesh frames wash out and reused for a new screen emulsion. The squeegee allows the ink to be spread evenly over the entire screen.
Thanks to this technique, also known as permeographic printing, we can create high-quality and durable prints. Screen printing on textiles requires a drying process after the application of each ink.
Let each ink dry to prevent them from mixing with each other and to ensure that they will hold up after washing.

Why use screen printing as a textile printing method?
Value for money
If you want to customize your shirts at home, this practice can be quite expensive due to the need for preparation before printing.
A screen is created for each color of the design. This means more preparation time. But, for companies and businesses that have a large volume of prints, it is the best option. The reason is that as more products you need, the more cheap the order will be.
